SCOPE AND CONTENT

These papers document the genesis and development of the pictorial history of Radcliffe College complied and written by Dorothy Elia Howells '60 to celebrate the centennial of the college.
A Historians' Committee formed in 1972 by Priscilla Gough Treat '19 to plan the celebration of Radcliffe's unique history was the nucleus of the Centennial Committee which met for the first time on June 3, 1975. This committee agreed at its first meeting to commission a history of Radcliffe to be presented in pictorial format with brief narrative texts, relating Radcliffe to the broader context of the history of women's education. The Centennial Committee appointed an, Editorial Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of Catherine (Ruggles) Gerrish '32 and Nora (Ronhovde) Hohenlohe '66 which met between 1976-1978. The members of the committee read and commented on drafts of the manuscript prepared by the editor Dorothy Elia Howells, and their suggestions were incorporated into the text.
This collection consists of minutes of the Editorial Advisory Committee, correspondence with publishers, annotated drafts of the manuscript arranged by chapter, and sources for quotations and other historical data.
