BIOGRAPHY

An actress whose stage name was Bessie Bernard, and a press agent for the St. Charles Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans, Elizabeth Smallwood Shields was the first southern woman to hold the position of press agent.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Photographs and newspaper clippings re Elizabeth Smallwood Shields's career as an actress and as press agent for the St. Charles Orpheum Theatre, the first Southern woman to occupy such a position. Also, photographs and biographical material concerning her sister, Martha Smallwood Field "Catharine Cole," New Orleans news reporter and other members of the Shields family including Elizabeth Smallwood Shields' children and grandchildren.
