Mabelle Smith Kent Papers, 1904-1908; item description, dates. SC 150, folder #. Radcliffe College Archives, Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Mabelle Smith Kent was born on July 14, 1884 in Boston, and was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts by her parents Joseph Henry Smith (a sugar inspector) and Eliza Abbie Knowles. She received her A.B. from Radcliffe College in 1908. She remained at Radcliffe and completed a semester of graduate study in Greek in 1909. After Radcliffe, she taught high school French, Greek and Latin from 1910 until 1917, when she resigned to marry Harold Weeks Kent. They had one daughter, Patricia Kent Clark (Radcliffe A.B. '43). Mabelle Smith Kent resumed teaching after her husband's death in 1924, continuing until her death ca. 1947 at age 63.

This collection of Radcliffe-related material contains photographs, clippings, correspondence with fellow students, verse, memorabilia, examinations and other school papers. Correspondence with fellow students includes such topics as classes, club activities, freshman and senior advisees, pranks, grades, rules, and social activities. These notes exhibit the vibrant sense of humor of Mabelle Smith Kent (known as "Posie" and "Slaps" to her classmates).
