BIOGRAPHY

Mary Isabella (Batchelder) James was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Batchelder of Cambridge, Mass. She had six brothers: Samuel Jr. (married Minnie?), William (married Augusta?), John (married E. Constantia?), Frank (married Susan?), Eugene, and Horace.
Mary Isabella (Batchelder) James, called Isabella or Bella by her family, married Thomas Potts James and moved with him to Philadelphia in the 1840s or early 1850s. They had four children, of whom Mary Isabella (married de Gozzaldi) was the eldest. The others were Montgomery, Francesca (married Troup), and Clarence Gray. Mary Isabella (Batchelder) James worked with the Freedmen's Aid Society after the Civil War.
Mary Isabella de Gozzaldi, known as Ella, was born in Burlington, New Jersey, on September 9, 1852. She spent much of her childhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the home of her maternal grandparents. In 1885 she married Silvio Mario (or Maria) Alfredo de Gozzaldi, an Austrian military attache whom she met in Rome. The couple had three children: Amy (married Richard W. Hall), Richard, and Alfred James. A genealogist and expert on Massachusetts history, Mary Isabella de Gozzaldi was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as a vice president of the Cambridge Historical Society. She died in Cambridge in 1935.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains the correspondence of three generations of women in the Batchelder, James, and de Gozzaldi families, as well as letters to and from other family members and friends. The correspondence is, in large part, personal, with few references to professional or civic activities or current events.
Three series of letters make up the bulk of the collection: from Mrs. Samuel Batchelder to her daughter, Mary Isabella (Batchelder) James; from Mary Isabella (Batchelder) James to her daughter, Mary Isabella de Gozzaldi; and from Frances (James) Troup to her sister, Mary Isabella de Gozzaldi.
The collection also contains de Gozzaldi family correspondence, and letters from minor correspondents.
