Scope and Contents

The mid to late 1960s were a difficult period in the life of Charles Mingus. During this time he had financial and other problems and he was evicted from his loft in 1966. The papers in this collection (mostly copies of originals) document some of the trying events of those years. The collection includes correspondence between Mingus and his lawyer, Howard E. Fischer as well as correspondence between Fischer and various New York City and other officials, lawyers, and publishers on Mingus's behalf. Other documents in the collection include the lease Mingus had to the loft from which he was eventually evicted, various legal documents, contracts with publishers and proprietors of performance venues, and a contract with the film maker, Thomas Reichman, for his documentary film Mingus.
