Biographical Notes

Christian (Johns Hopkins, M.D. 1900; Harvard, A.M. 1903) held the Hershey Chair of Theory and Practice of Physic and served as Dean of the Harvard Medical School from 1908 to 1912. He was also physician-in-chief at Carney Hospital from 1907 to 1912 and at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1910 to 1939.

Scope and Content

The Henry Asbury Christian collection of manuscript papers, correspondence, scrapbooks, and related materials comprises the personal papers, correspondence, and memorabilia collected by Dr. Henry Asbury Christian from approximately 1891 until his death in 1951. They mainly reflect his career in Boston at the Harvard Medical School, where he served as Dean from 1908 until 1912 and as Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic from 1908 until his retirement in 1939, and at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, where he held the appointment of Chief of Medicine from 1912 to 1939. During his retirement years Dr. Christian arranged his papers and memorabilia, mainly in chronological order, and had them mounted onto sheets of paper which were bound into fifty-three volumes; following his death, these volumes came into the Harvard Medical Archives. In 1991, the Christian Papers were recataloged into the manuscript collections of the Harvard Medical Library in The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, at which time an index of correspondents was prepared. The list of contents of the forty five volumes follows, with the index of correspondents placed after it.
Materials entirely in English.
