Biographical Notes

The Isador H. Coriat Archive is a very fragmentary collection of materials from a noted Boston psychiatrist. These papers had been roughly sorted in large envelopes or files, marked by Dr. Coriat, and were stored in a cardboard carton over a period of years. The original groups remain intact wherever possible, and what little correspondence was contained herein has been kept with the related materials with which it was found. However, over a period of time various users have rearranged the original order--albeit unintentionally--and the lack of dates or specific identification on the many typescript notes and essays created further problems. The archivist has thus seen fit to resort to a somewhat artificial but hopefully useable system of arrangement. Special thanks are due to Barbara Sicherman for calling attention to her biographical article on Coriat in the DAB and to the bibliography of his works in Grinstein, copies of which are included here for the use of future readers. A chronology of Dr. Coriat is also included below. In addition to the sources cited at the end of the DAB article, readers are directed to Sicherman's contribution, "Isador H. Coriat: The Making of an American Psychoanalyst," in "Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy and the New England Scene, 1894-1944," ed. George E. Gifford, Jr. (New York, 1978).
