Abstract: This finding aid describes photographs, negatives, slides, and photomechanical prints of Boston Medical Library officers, librarians, members, events, library materials, and buildings. Go directly to images.
The Boston Medical Library. Images, ca. 1870-1971, are four series from an artificial collection assembled in the 1960s from the holdings of the Harvard Medical Library and the Boston Medical Library. The photographs are now housed at the Center for the History of Medicine in Countway Library. Images were acquired individually or removed from manuscript or archival collections and filed by subject. Because of this practice, the provenance of many of the images has been lost.
Processed by Judy Greene, April 2005. Selected information from the image collections management database at the Center for the History of Medicine in Countway Library was exported for inclusion in this finding aid. Formal titles for photographs are used when supplied, otherwise, descriptive titles were created and enclosed in brackets. When possible, images are described as groups rather than individually and representative images selected for viewing on-line. 'Identical' images may vary in condition and the presence or absence of inscriptions or mounts. Location number includes size. Images are small (S = 8 x 10 inches or less), medium (M = greater than 8 x 10 inches and less than 11 x 14 inches), large (L = greater than 11 x 14 inches and less than 16 x 20 inches), extra large (XL = greater than 16 x 20 inches), color slides (CS = 35 mm.), or glass plates (G = up to 4 x 5 inches). A few images have also been cataloged more fully in VIA, Harvard's on-line image database.
Online access to larger views of some thumbnails is restricted by copyright and may be available only to Harvard ID holders. For more information please see the

Reference Services and Access Information.
This finding aid was produced as part of a
Library Digital Initiative (LDI) grant project. To provide increased access to visual collections, the LDI project staff described approximately 4500 historical images of Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, and the Boston Medical Library in a series of OASIS finding aids. Of the images described in these finding aids, 1600 were digitized, stored in the Harvard Digital Repository (DRS), and are viewable online. To provide historical context, the finding aids also include links to digitized pages of Harvard annual reports in the Harvard-Radcliffe Online Historical Reference Shelf.
This finding aid describes photographs, negatives, slides, and photomechanical prints of Boston Medical Library officers, librarians, members, events, library materials, and buildings. Images depict building exteriors at 5 Hamilton Place, 19 Boylston Place, and 8 The Fenway; interior views of 19 Boylston Place and 8 The Fenway; events and meetings; and library materials including books, book plates, and library catalogs. Unless noted all images are black and white.
Images are organized by subject into 4 series that are further organized by location or subject into 8 subseries. Within subseries similar photographs are organized into image groups. Series are arranged alphabetically, subseries are arranged chronologically, and image groups are arranged alphabetically. Within image groups individual images are arranged chronologically by date of original image represented. N.B.: Image display may be affected by your choice of browser.
Series Overview
-
Series 00097: Buildings and grounds. Images,
ca. 1870-1965.
36 images.
Historical Note: The first Boston Medical Library, founded in 1805 by members of the Medical Improvement Society and administered for much of its tenure by Harvard Medical School faculty, lasted until 1826, when its collection of medical literature was donated to the Boston Athenaeum. When a second Boston Medical Library was founded in 1875, the Boston Atheneum returned many important volumes to the newly reconstituted library. This second Boston Medical Library continues today as part of the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine. More information about the history of the Boston Medical Library:

-
Subseries B: Boston Medical Library, 1878-1901 (19 Boylston Place). Images, 1918.
2
images.
Historical Note: In 1878 the Boston Medical Library Association purchased 19 Boylston Place, the former residence of Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe and Julia Ward Howe, to house its library and serve as a meeting place for the Observation Medical Society, Medical Improvement Society, Massachusetts Medical Society, and Suffolk District Medical Society.

Subseries C: Boston Medical Library, 1901-1965 (8 The Fenway). Images, ca. 1900-1965.
31
images.
Historical Note: In 1899 the Board of the Boston Medical Society voted to sell 19 Boylston Place and build a larger building near the Fens, an area that landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted had recently converted from mud flats into parkland. The Boston Medical Library remained at 8 The Fenway from 1901 until 1965, when its collections (over 245,000 volumes) were moved along with those of the Harvard Medical Library (over 166,000 volumes) into the new Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine on the campus of Harvard Medical School.

Historical Note: Need for additional space to house the rapidly expanding collections became apparent almost as soon as the Library was dedicated. In 1903 the Board acquired land adjacent to the building and began raising funds for a stack addition. A basement was completed in 1908, but further construction was postponed during World War I. In 1930, a three-story shell was added over the basement, but the interior of the stack addition was never completed.

photographs.
Historical Note: Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. served from 1875 to 1888 as President of the second Boston Medical Library's Executive Committee. Upon retiring from office, he donated his collection of 698 medical books to the Library, which accepted them formally on January 29, 1889. Exactly seventy-five years later, as the Boston Medical Library was planning to join with the Harvard Medical Library in forming the new Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, members gathered on January 29, 1964 to remember Dr. Holmes' generosity and look to the future.

Historical Note: Hired to transform the residential building at 19 Boylston Place into a library, architect Henry Van Brunt, designer of Harvard's Memorial Hall, converted the basement and first floor into a large meeting hall. He divided the second floor into a front reading room for members and a smaller back room for library business. When one of Boston's first telephones was installed in 1879, a Directory of Nurses, the first such employment registry in the country, was an immediate success and an important source of revenue for the Library.

ca. 1914-1953.
23 images.
Historical Note: A 300-seat auditorium on the third floor was named for John Ware (HMS 1853), a smaller first floor hall seating 75 was named in honor of Richard Sprague (HMS 1887), and a committee meeting room on the intermediate floor was named for William Cranch Bond Fifield (HMS 1851). In 1905 the periodical reading room was named in memory of James Read Chadwick (HMS 1871), first librarian of the Boston Medical Library and founder of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association. In 1930 the Chadwick Periodical Room was transformed into a reading room and renamed in memory of Morton Prince (HMS 1879).
