Historical/Biographical Information


Ken Gormley received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1980 and completing his B.A. at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon graduating from Harvard Law School took on a number of positions, including: clerking for U.S. District Judge Donald E. Ziegler; teaching at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law; engaging in private practice; serving as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Legislative Reapportionment Commission; and serving as special clerk to Justice Ralph J. Cappy of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Since 1994 Professor Gormley has been a member of the Duquesne Law faculty.
In 1997, Gormley published his biography of Archibald Cox, Archibald Cox: Conscience of a Nation. He has also published dozens of book chapters and scholarly articles, including pieces in the Stanford Law Review and Michigan Law Review.

Scope and Contents


The Ken Gormley Papers contain the bulk of the research Gormley did in order to write the authorized biography of Archibald Cox, Archibald Cox: Conscience of a Nation. A significant part of the collection relate to the oral histories Gormley collected for research purposes. There are 119 cassette tapes, many of which contain interviews with Cox and his family, and typed transcripts of the interviews.
Also included in the collection are various drafts of the biography, varying from hand-written chapters to complete, typed drafts.
The remainder of the collection contains materials Gormley photocopied from various archives, primarily the John F. Kennedy Library. These papers relate to Cox's time as Solictor General, 1961-1965, and his association with the Kennedys, John, Robert, and Edward.
