Abstract: Records related to the Emergency Coalition for Public Interest Placement, formed after the elimination of public interest career counseling at Harvard Law School in August 1989.
The Emergency Coalition for Public Interest Placement was formed in reaction to new Harvard Law School dean Robert C. Clark's elimination of public interest counseling staff in August 1989, a month after assuming office. This decision met with widespread protests from students as well as coverage from mainstream media outlets. The formation of the ECPIP at the beginning of the 1989-1990 academic year served to mobilize student protest, eventually leading to the opening of the Office of Public Interest Advising (now the Bernard Koteen Office of Public Interest Advising).
This collection contains materials collected and produced by the Emergency Coalition for Public Interest Placement during 1989 and 1990. The records are largely composed of memoranda and photocopied newspaper clippings, as well as press releases, agendas, correspondence and other similar miscellany. The papers were organized into topical groups by their donor, Lori M. Wallach, a leader of ECPIP, before their donation in July 1990, and this organization has been retained.
The following catalog entries represent persons, organizations, and topics documented in this collection. An entry for each appears in the Harvard On Line Library Information System (HOLLIS) and other automated bibliographic databases. THIS IS NOT AN INDEX.
