Box List

The collection is organized by size in two boxes. Within folders, the photographs are arranged chronologically, when possible.

Scope and Contents

The William Henry Hastie Photographs span the years 1905 to 1994, with the bulk of them falling into the period starting with his appointment as Civilian Aide to Secretary of War Stimson in 1940, through his tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and ending with his death in 1976.
The collection consists almost exclusively of black and white photographs of varying sizes ranging from 3"x4" to 11"x14". There are also a few letters and notes identifying the photographs included with the collection. Where applicable, an attempt was made to refer to relevant manuscripts associated with photos in The William Henry Hastie Papers located in the Harvard Law School Library, Manuscripts Division.
Many of the photos were identified. Of the unidentified photos, an effort was made to research the photos in order to identify them. The main sources used for the research were The William Henry Hastie Papers stored on microfilm in the Harvard Law School Library and the biography of William Hastie by Gilbert Ware entitled, William Hastie: Grace Under Pressure (Oxford University Press, 1984). Unidentified photographs are indicated as such in the inventory. Where possible, dates for undated photographs were estimated from the research. If the research did not indicate a date, none was included in the inventory description.
Negatives from the photos used in the 1984 William H. Hastie Exhibition at the Harvard Law School Library are stored separately in the Art and Visual Materials, Special Collections Department. Photos that have negatives stored here are indicated by the label "[negative]" in the inventory.
Of special interest are the photos taken of William Hastie as the Civilian Aide to Secretary of War visiting a segregated Army training camp located in box 1, folder 2; the photo of Hastie with President Truman in the Virgin Islands (box 1, photo 4-1); the photo of Hastie with President Eisenhower (box 1, photo 12-8); Hastie being sworn in as Governor of the Virgin Islands (box 1, photo 3-10); Hastie being photographed in Philadelphia at the time of his appointment to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals (box 1, photo 13-4); Hastie as Chief Judge of the Appeals Court (box 2, photo 2-1); and Hastie receiving the Philadelphia Award (box 1, photo 15-7).
Hastie material housed in other repositories is listed at the end of this finding guide.
