Abstract: This collection documents the Harvard undergraduate experience of four members of the Richards family, including Eben Richards (AB 1857), his son Eben Richards (AB 1886), his grandson Eben Richards (AB 1919), and his great-grandson Eben Richards (AB 1952). The collection contains a variety of materials, including an academic cap and gown worn by all four members of the Richards family, lantern slides documenting World War I era Harvard, reunion memorabilia from the Class of 1886, and various other ephemeral items.

Biographical note for Eben Richards (AB 1857)

Eben Richards (1835-1891), grocer and manufacturer, was born on December 13, 1835, in Brookline, Mass. to Ebenezer and Theoline (Tilden) Richards. He received his Harvard AB in 1857 and his AM in 1872. Richards married Caroline Beckwith Maxwell in 1859; they had six children, including Eben Richards (1866-1942). After his graduation, he worked as a wholesale grocer with the St. Louis firm Christopher & Richards; the partnership was dissolved in 1862 but the firm continued under the name Eben Richards, Jr., and E. Richards, Jr. Bro. until 1869. From 1869 until his retirement in 1881, Richards was engaged in the manufacturing of spelter as president of the Missouri Zinc Company. He died on January 25, 1891, in St. Louis.

Biographical note for Eben Richards (AB 1886)

Eben Richards (1866-1942), lawyer, was born on January 10, 1866, in St Louis to Eben Richards (AB 1857) and Caroline Beckwith Maxwell. He received his Harvard AB in 1886 and his LLB from the St. Louis Law School in 1888. He married Perle Pierce in 1896; they had two children, including a son, Eben Richards (1897-1984). He died on October 9, 1942.

Biographical note for Eben Richards (AB 1919)

Eben Richards (1897-1984), stockbroker and manufacturer, was born on July 10, 1897, in Prides Crossing, Mass. to Eben Richards (AB 1886) and Perle Pierce. He received his Harvard AB in 1919. He married Enid Blenheim in 1929; their son, Eben Richards, was born on April 16, 1930. He served in World War I, enlisting on May 18, 1918, and was discharged on January 4, 1919. He spent twenty-two years selling securities and in 1941, became president of Precision Shapes, Inc., a manufacturer of parts for military apparatus in Suffern, NY. He died on May 3, 1984.

Biographical note for Eben Richards (AB 1952)

Eben Richards (1930- ) was born on April 16, 1930, to Eben Richards (1897- ) and Enid Blenheim. He received his Harvard AB in 1952. Richards spent the majority of his career in media production, both film and audio-visual, working for Wilding, Inc. in Chicago, the Government Employees Insurance Company, and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Scope of the Richards family collection of Harvard memorabilia

This collection documents the Harvard undergraduate experience of four members of the Richards family, including Eben Richards (AB 1857), his son Eben Richards (AB 1886), his grandson Eben Richards (AB 1919), and his great-grandson Eben Richards (AB 1952). Central in the collection is the academic cap and gown worn by all four at their Harvard graduations. Additional items include a master's gown worn by Eben Richards (AB 1857), reunion memorabilia collected by Eben Richards (AB 1886), and lantern slides taken by Eben Richards (AB 1919) of World War I era Harvard ROTC and athletic events, as well as scattered ephemera collected by Eben Richards (AB 1857) and Eben Richards (AB 1952).
