Abstract: The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. Photographs depict people, places, and activities at Harvard University and its vicinity in Cambridge. Portraits are of faculty, staff, and visitors. Subjects include activities and events such as student life and commencement. The photographs are chiefly black-and-white photoprints with a few 35 mm negatives.

Acquisition Information:

Accession 11923, transferred to the Harvard University Archives from the News Office, 7 March 1990.

Processing Information:

This inventory was created in December 2013 by Kate Bowers from a variety of information sources. The photographs were not examined.
Titles were devised by archivists.

Historical note

The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. During the early 1970s, the News Office was placed administratively under the Office of the Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs. In 1994-1995, the name of the office was changed to Harvard University Office of News and Public Affairs and later was renamed Public Affairs and Communications.
