Historical note

Nathan Marsh Pusey (1907-2001) served as the twenty-fourth president of Harvard University from 1953 to 1971. Formally elected by the Harvard Corporation on June 1, 1953, Pusey was invested with the "powers and privileges" of his office at an installation ceremony on October 13, 1953 in the Faculty Room in University Hall. The brief 20-minute ceremony, attended by 200 guests, began with a prayer by the Reverend Charles L. Taylor Jr., Dean of the Episcopal Theological School. The president of the Harvard Board of Overseers Charles Edward Wyzanski, Jr., then presented Pusey with the insignia of his new office and in remarks pledged "undoubted allegiance and fealty" on behalf of Harvard graduates to Pusey as president of Harvard College. In his response, Pusey promised to continue to promote "the education of youth, and the advancement of learning" at Harvard. He also vowed to nourish Harvard as "a living intellectual enterprise." After Pusey spoke, a benediction was given by the Reverend Taylor and the University Choir sang Harvard's traditional commencement hymn, the 78th Psalm (Give Ear, Ye Children to My Law). After the hymn, attendees remained for refreshments before dispersing.
