Abstract: On September 6, 1943, Harvard University presented British Prime Minister Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Records include instructions to event staff, the text of Mr. Churchill's speech, newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera such as programs, order of exercises, samples of tickets, and place cards.

Historical note

On September 6, 1943, Harvard University presented British Prime Minister Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his resolve in turning back "the tide of tyranny in freedom's darkest hour." After receiving his degree, Churchill addressed a national radio audience from Sanders Theatre promoting Anglo-American unity and postwar cooperation to safeguard future world security. Later, Churchill attended a luncheon at the Fogg Museum and appeared on the steps of Memorial Church, greeting a crowd of 10,000 people including cadets, military officers, students and faculty, staff members, and alumni.
