Abstract: The Harvard Chemical Club (also known as the Cambridge Chemical Club) was organized on December 22, 1879 to advance the study of chemistry at Harvard University. The records are organized in two series: Letter from Kenneth L. Mark and Meeting minutes.

Processing Information:

The Records were first classified and described in the Harvard University Archives shelflist prior to 1990. In September 2008, Dominic P. Grandinetti re-processed the collection, including reorganization and replacement of storage containers.
Call numbers were simplified and reassigned. Call number HUD 3274.5500 was made obsolete by the archivist during the 2008 re-processing. All the materials for the Records of the Harvard Chemical Club now fall under the single call number HUD 3274.5000.

Historical Essay

The Harvard Chemical Club (also known as the Cambridge Chemical Club ) was organized on December 22, 1879 to advance the study of chemistry at Harvard University. Membership was open to faculty and graduate students who had an interest in chemistry. The Club was founded by Professors Walcott Gibbs,Josiah Parsons,Henry Barker Hill, and Charles Loring Jackson. Members met several times during the school year to hear reports and present papers on the progress of their research.

Scope of the Collection

The Records of the Harvard Chemical Club document its origins and activities. Most of the records consist of meeting minutes documenting chemistry research undertaken by the Club's members.
