Historical note

The St. Louis Exposition (also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition) was an international exposition held in St. Louis, Missouri from April 30 through December 1, 1904, to celebrate the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Featured among the exhibits in the Palace of Education, the Harvard exhibit included photographs, charts, models, architectural plans, pamphlets, and books, which illustrated the growth and development of Harvard from its earliest beginnings to the end of the nineteenth century. The Harvard book collection (estimated at 1350 volumes) at the Exposition featured the works of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (arranged under such topics as Ancient and Modern Languages, History, Politics, and Economics), the writings of Harvard graduates from 1642 to 1879, the writings of faculty from the Harvard Law School, and a series of volumes of publications issued by the University and Harvard departments.
