    Historical note

The 250th anniversary of the founding of Harvard College, also known as the "Harvard Jubilee," was celebrated from November 5 through 8, 1886. During the first day of the celebration (Law School Day) Harvard Law School graduates held a reunion for the first time and formed the Harvard Law School Association to advance legal education, to promote the interests of the Harvard Law School, and to encourage fellowship among members. The second day of the celebration (Undergraduates' Day) featured athletic events (boat races and a football game), literary exercises at the Sanders Theatre, a marching torchlight procession through Harvard Yard, and a fireworks display. The celebrations of the third day (Foundation Day) included historical sermons and addresses at Appleton Chapel and a concert given by the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Sanders Theatre. The fourth and final day (Alumni Day) featured the gathering of Harvard alumni at Gore Hall where honorary degrees were conferred by Harvard President Charles W. Eliot, a poem was read by Oliver Wendell Holmes, and an address was delivered by the President of the United States, Grover Cleveland.
