Abstract: The images in this series chiefly depict the Harvard environment, places where the Harvard community studies, teaches, works, researches, or lives. Rarely, images may be other two-dimensional images such as engravings, drawings, or paintings, or photographic reproductions of such two-dimensional artwork.

Immediate Source of Acquisition:

These images were acquired from the last third of the nineteenth century through the 20th.

Creation of the Views files:

The Views were compiled by Harvard University Archives staff starting in approximately the late 19th century. Staff generally interfiled photographs or other 2-dimensional images, regardless of their source, into categories based on a location, building, or landscape feature and for ease of reference. The photographs either entered the University Archives alone or within larger collections or record groups. This practice was ceased by the year 2000.
Photographs received after the year 2000 without context continue to be added to the HUV categories; however, photographs that are acquired in a context, either filed within textual collections or as part of primarily photographic collections, remain in their original context.

Creation of this Finding Aid:

The lists of folders were keyed by Laurie Maranian in August 2004. This finding aid was written by Kate Bowers in September 2004 and substantially re-edited by Pat Donoghue in 2009.

Access:

Some images may be restricted due to their physical condition. Such conditions will be noted in the list below. Please consult Reference Staff for details.

Online access:

Some of the images have been digitized and are available online. Links accompany image descriptions.
