The Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory (HUSL) was operated by Harvard University during World War II, under contract with the National Defense Research Committee/Office of Scientific Research and Development (Contracts OE Msr 58 and OE Msr 287). The Lab was established to improve available equipment for detection of under water sound and to design new equipment. The contracts continued through January 31, 1946. Frederick V. Hunt was director of the Laboratory.
Includes administrative records of Director and Associate Director; correspondence with various companies concerning placement of laboratory personnel after project completion; photographs of experiments and apparatus, blueprints; staff memoranda; personnel records; a 1946 staff roster; and 1945 project report. Files of Director F.V. Hunt contain correspondence, memoranda, personnel lists, contracts, minutes and related Administrative Council documents, office logs, clippings, manuscript history of the Laboratory, and items relating to its dismantling after termination of its contract.

Many of the records related to dismantling, disposition, final accounting before the Lab was disbanded, 1941-1949.

Scope and Content: Contains the administrative records of the Director, Frederick V. Hunt, and the Associate Director, C.P. Boner. Includes correspondence, memoranda and reports communicated between the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory(HUSL) and the Office of Scientific Research and Development(OSRD), the National Defense Research Committee(NDRC), the US Navy and other laboratories and companies.
These records document personnel matters, operation and installation of equipment and experimental devices, use of Navy vessels, security matters, training activities, coordination between different research groups, requests for research data, test results, list of projects, status reports and completion reports on various projects, minutes and schedules of meetings and conferences, OSRD and NDRC policies on document disposition, and project termination.
The series includes memoranda and correspondence regarding the HUSL budget, contracts, salaries and wage scales, organization, patents and inventions. It also includes technical correspondence arranged by project numbers, and by subject, such as Sonar, steering dynamics, torpedoes, transducers and BDI. Also includes the Director's outgoing letters arranged alphabetically and by project.
Arrangement: The records are divided into five subseries. Scope and Content: Contains the internal memoranda of the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory (HUSL) regarding various aspects of the Laboratory's activities. The memoranda were issued mostly by individual members of the administrative and research staff to other members of the organization. The copies in this series were sent to the central files of the HUSL.
Topics include the HUSL's research activities, scope of the projects involved, assignments of scientific personnel to projects, policy and relations with other laboratories, design and construction, testing and installation of equipment and devices, operations, schedules and daily log of HUSL's activities on Navy vessels, training activities and security issues. Research topics include Bearing Deviation Indicators (BDI), Sonar, transducers, torpedoes, and anti-submarine research.
Documents include internal technical memoranda by project numbers, photographs and drawings of devices, and departmental reports that include abstracts and comments, minutes of weekly meetings, and preparation of manuals. Notebooks, memoranda, and reports from the Library and Editorial Office are also included.

Scope and Content: Contains the external reports of the Harvard Underwater Sound Laboratory (HUSL) regarding various aspects of the Laboratory's activities. The reports were prepared for distribution outside the Laboratory.
Includes bi-weekly reports of the HUSL to the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). Also includes organizational reports of the various HUSL research groups, and reports on the Bureau of Ordnance projects by project number.
These reports document research progress and results, test run data and procedures, and operation and installation of equipment and devices; they also include instruction and maintenance manuals. Specific research topics include Acoustic Locating System, Bearing Deviation Indicators (BDI), Operational Bearing Recorder, Sonar, Automatic Target Training, Echo-Ranging equipment and methods, Simultaneous Lobe Comparisons (SLC), Torpedoes, Transducers, and Anti-submarine Research.
