Abstract: Portraits by the photographer Philippe Halsman of nineteen people associated with
Harvard, most of whom were members of the faculty or alumni. The prints were made
by Halsman at the time the photographs were taken.
Portraits were a gift to the University by Philippe Halsman Studio, New York, N. Y., accession number 14261, 2000 December 19.
Photographs surveyed, described, and re-housed by Erin Cral and Andrea Youngfert in
2007. This finding aid was created by Patrice Donoghue in 2009.
These portraits are open for research.

Biographical / Historical: John Kenneth Galbraith, Harvard A.M. 1950 (honorary), served as a tutor at Harvard
in the 1930s and was appointed Professor of Economics in 1949. He served as Paul M.
Warburg Professor from 1959 until his retirement in 1975.

Biographical / Historical: Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius, Harvard A.M. (honorary) 1942 and Doctor of Arts
(honorary) 1953, joined the faculty of the Graduate School of Design in 1937. He served
as Professor of Architecture and Chairman of the Department of Architecture until
his retirement in 1952.

Biographical / Historical: John J. McCloy, alumnus of the Harvard Law School (LL.B. 1921), served as Assistant
Secretary of War during World War II and later served as president of the World Bank.
He received an honorary Doctor of Laws in 1951.
