Biographical / Historical

Merrill (A.B. 1874) joined the Chinese Customs Service, serving first in Korea and later as Commissioner in China. Hart was the Inspector-General of the Chinese Martime Customs (1863-1907). Aglen succeeded Hart in his position (1907-1928).

Minimally processed. Arranged into the following series: I. Letterpress copybooks, Oct. 1884-Jan. 1913 II. Typescript transcripts with miscellaneous letters and memoranda, Oct. 1884-1916 III. Manuscript letters from Sir Robert Hart and other correspondence

Scope and Contents

Typescript transcripts (some carbons) of letters with autograph manuscript revisions of many of the letters contained in 7 v. of letterpress copybooks; and manuscript letters received, chiefly from Robert Hart.
