Biographical / Historical

John Lowell served in the Massachusetts legislature and in the Continental Congress and state senate while maintaining a legal practice in Newburyport (Mass.) and Boston (Mass.); in 1789 he was appointed one of the original 13 federal district court judges by President George Washington.
