Biographical / Historical

Amilcare Ponchielli (1835-1886) was an Italian opera composer. He married Teresina Brambilla (1845-1921), a Italian soprano, in 1874.

Scope and Contents

Collection consists chiefly of letters from Amilcare Ponchielli to his wife, Teresa Brambilla-Ponchielli, spanning 1880-1885. The letters discuss rehearsals for La gioconda; teaching Puccini at the Milan Conservatory, including the premiere of Le villi; Brambilla's travels, as well as the many roles she sang; and other topics. With these are some letters from Ponchielli to others in the Italian music industry including publishers, musicians, and composers. Also includes a few manuscript musical sketches.
