Biographical / Historical

Carl Bonn studied at Wimbledon Art School and the Royal Academy, he was resident designer for the Dublin Gate Theatre from 1938 to 1944. In 1944 he moved to the Gaiety Theatre, and also worked freelance for Jimmy O'Dea at the Gaiety and for various Irish touring companies. Between 1947 and 1949 Bonn worked for the Abbey Theatre before moving to become the resident designer and costume maker at the Liverpool Playhouse, 1949-1951. In the 1950s, with his partner Colin Mackenzie, he opened theatrical costume workshop in Covent Garden, in London which remained in operation through the 1970s. They were considered the best costumiers in the business.
