Jacob Abbot (1768-1834) was born in Wilton, New Hampshire, the 2nd of 10 children of Abiel & Dorcas Abbot. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and he received an AB from Harvard College in 1792. He was ordained a pastor of the Congregational church in Hampton Falls, in 1798. He married Catherine P. Thayer in Boston in1802. Mr. Abbot was "troubled by a rise of other denominations" and he became a Unitarian and was dismissed from his church in 1827. He moved to Windham, where he spent the remainder of his life. In 1834 he was drowned by the upsetting of his boat as he was returning from public worship across a pond between the meeting-house and his home.
