Scope and Contents

The title Earl of Huntingdon was recreated for the seventh time for George Hastings in 1529 and is still currently the family seat of his line. Poems in this collection date from the 17th and 18th-centuries. Many of the compositions were written in tribute to, or in memoriam of, members of the family including Henry Hastings, Lord Hastings (1630–1649), Lady Elizabeth Hastings (1682-1739), Lucy Davies Hastings, Countess Huntingdon (1613 – November 14, 1679), and Lady Elizabeth Langham (died 1664). The collection also contains poems regarding several people with familial ties to the Hastings including Sir George Rawdon, 1st Baronet (1604–1684), Sir Arthur Rawdon (17 October 1662 - 17 October 1695), his wife Helen Graham Rawdon (1662-1709), and Bishop John Brahmall (1594-1663). Included are works of English satire by prominent poets Bathsua Makin, John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, and Sir Carr Scroope.
All poems are manuscript but in unknown hands; most are likely manuscript transcripts.
