Abstract: Original pen and ink, watercolor and graphite landscape drawings by Edward Lear, the English artist, illustrator, author and poet.
Edward Lear (1812-1888) is remembered primarily for his nonsense rhymes and limericks, but in his own lifetime he sought recognition as a landscape painter.

49 original landscape drawings on 31 mounts (31 sheets), in watercolor, pen and graphite. From Lord Northbrook's collection, volume 2 only; inside front cover includes bookplate of Lord Northbrook (Thomas George Baring, Earl of Northbrook (1826-1904)). Title on cover: Vol. II. Central India 1875. Lord Northbrook; volume lacks a titlepage.Drawings are mounted on sheets (28 x 41 cm., each) in album, and are identified by leaf numbers, and captions when present. Many leaves contain multiple images, some have multiple captions. Captions listed in finding aid are transcribed from the calligrapic printed captions in the album. The additonal manuscript notes in pencil with some drawings, have not been transcribed. Leaves f. 32, f. 33, and f. 34 are all blank.
