Historical Note

Higginson was an author, reformer, and soldier; colonel of the first Black regiment during the Civil War (1862-1864); an ardent abolitionist and advocate of women's suffrage.

Scope and Content

5 volumes of scrapbooks of notices and reviews of books written or edited by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The bulk of the material is clippings from newspapers and magazines, but there are also a few manuscript letters and some manuscript and autograph manuscript notes. The volumes covered are: Malbone: An Oldport Romance (1869), Army Life in a Black Regiment (1870), Atlantic Essays (1871), Brief Biographies (1875), A Book of American Explorers (1877), and Short Studies of American Authors (1880). One volume contains newspaper criticism of Higginson's magazine articles.
