Biographical / Historical

English actress, writer, and educator, Cécile de Banke left England in 1916 to join a repertory company in South Africa. She spent 14 years teaching elocution and dramatics in South Africa before emigrating to the United States in 1929 to teach at Wellesley College. She retired in 1955.

Correspondence includes letters between Cécile de Banke and Eleanor Blair, Phyllis Gauntlett, and John Henry Amshewitz. Also included are photographs and clippings related to de Banke's professional career and a bolero jacket she wore on stage.
