Biographical / Historical

W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911) was a librettist and Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) was a composer who collaborated on a number of comic operas in Victorian England.


Organized into the following series:

Scope and Contents

Contains letters written by W.S. Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan, Richard D'Oyly Carte, and others; programs and playbills from Gilbert and Sullivan operas, including performances by community and college theatre groups, and professional companies like the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, as well as an African-American theater troupe performing in New York (N.Y.); and printed ephemera concerning the operas and various production. Also includes some photographs of productions as well as librettos and sheet music.
