Biographical / Historical

The Catholic Church's Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was established in Spain in 1478; after various attempts at its abolition, it was officially dissolved in 1834. Those condemned for heresy by the Holy Office were executed after performing autos de fe (literally "acts of faith"), in which victims were expected to atone for their sins and accept the Church's authority; after execution, their property was appropriated by the Church. None of those convicted by the Inquisition in the documents comprising this collection and dispossessed of property are listed by name, but rather are referred to collectively. Since the collection came to Houghton via Harvard College Library's Judaica division (albeit with no documentation as to provenance), it is possible that the victims were Jews or conversos (converts) suspected of apostasy.
As an aid to research, the text of a representative certificate is included herewith. Almost all the documents conform to the following formula:
Arrangement

Arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

Consists of certificates written and signed by various Majorcan officials affirming that the Holy Office of the Inquisition continued to be in possession of property taken in autos de fe, stating value of property and amount of tax due the government. Referring to events that took place in the mid 18th century, the documents span the years 1795-1815.
The documents appear to have been prepared on behalf of senior officials of the government accounting office. It is unknown if the official named in any given document is the actual signatory, although the documents do bear manuscript seals in different hands than those that prepared them.
The original cover housing the documents dates from a later, unspecified time; it has been retained. Its title, Pagos y recibos al Receptor del Santo Oficio de Mallorca, sobre bienes confiscados en Autos de Feé [sic], is not entirely accurate in that the collection itself does not consist of payments and receipts. Moreover, the date range specified on the original cover, 1790-1804, is no longer accurate.
