Abstract: Two albums containing Llewelyn family portraits, views of Nice, France, Wales, and Italy, including photographic prints attributed to John Dillwyn Llewlyn and Edward Powell Nicholl, drawings, and lithogaphs.

Immediate Source of Acquisition:

96HB-804 F. Gift of Mrs. Harrison D. Horblit; received: 1996 February 16.

The materials in this group were acquired by Harrison D. Horblit as a set from Sotheby's London, 1986 Apr. 25, lot 83.

Processing Information:

At the time the collection was acquired by Horblit, it was described as consisting of two albums and a quantity of loose material (photographs, prints, and drawings). Materials mounted in the larger album (quarter green morocco gilt, with green cloth sides, ticket of Newman 24 Soho Square) were subsequently removed, but the empty binding was retained. To judge from variations in the size and texture of the mounts, the loose photographs now considered part of Horblit TypPh Album 45 were removed from several different albums.
The present organization of the photographs, prints (mostly lithographs), and drawings results from a previous processing at Houghton Library. It may reflect an earlier order of the collection. When the set was first catalogued at Houghton some photographs were grouped under the call number Horblit Typ Ph 805.50.5274. This number has been cancelled, but the running numbers (1-101) assigned to and inscribed on the pieces have been retained. The material is now stored in five cases corresponding to the five divisions of the list below.
A copy of a previous list that includes the measurements of individual items is kept in the curatorial files of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts.
The entry for each item includes the reproduction process, the title found on the piece (if applicable), and the description of the image. Unbracketed attributions and captions are taken from information lettered on the album leaves, printed on mounts, or forming part of the image of prints. Square brackets enclose cataloger's descriptions, including descriptions of later manuscript notes on the mounts.

Conditions Governing Access:

Access restricted; permission of Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts required.

Preferred Citation for Publication:

Llewelyn Family Portraits, and Views of Nice, France, Wales and Italy, circa 1786-1858 (Horblit TypPh Album 45). Houghton Library, Harvard University.
