Wider Church Ministries is a ministry of the United Church of Christ and successor of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM).
This series is part of the ABCFM collection received on deposit
from the ABCFM in 1944.
Restricted items in
the ABCFM collection are materials of the last forty years and some materials
specifically marked "Restricted". There are no such materials in this series.
Most items in this series are on microfilm (for which see below), permission of the
curator is required to consult the original documents.
Permission to quote from the ABCFM archives for publication
should be requested from both Houghton Library and the Executive Minister of Wider
Church Ministries.
Research Publications Ltd. (now Primary Source Microfilm, an
imprint of the Gale Group) filmed a considerable part of the ABCFM collection in the
early 1980s, their focus being the correspondence to and from the field before 1919.
For the contents of the 858 rolls of film, download the
reel listing,

Papers of the American Board of Commissioners
for Foreign Missions: Guide to the microfilm collection (1994), shelved in the
Houghton Reading Room. A set of the microfilm is in Lamont Library, call number Film
A467 (see HOLLIS record 1113915 ). Some papers in this series have also been
microfilmed by historical societies in the states where the ABCFM Indian missions
operated.
For a general note on the history
of the Board and the importance of its archives, see the finding aid to the main
collection.
Missions to American Indians began in 1817 with a mission
station in Brainerd, Tennessee, to serve the Cherokees. Other tribes were added to the
Board's deployment up to 1836, but the work met many obstacles, including the
dispersal of tribes by the U.S. government, and the Civil War put an end to almost all
mission activity. The following is a chronological list of the American Indian missions,
taken from the later Board year books:
- 1817: Cherokees in Tennessee.
Tribe deported west, 1838.
- 1818: Choctaws. Discontinued, 1859
because the tribe had become a Christian tribe.
- 1821: Cherokees in
Arkansas. Discontinued, 1860.
- 1826: Maumee Indians. Discontinued,
1835.
- 1826: Osage Indians. Discontinued, 1837.
- 1826: Mackinaw Indians. Discontinued, 1837.
- 1826: Tuscarora
Indians. Discontinued, 1860 as the tribe had been evangelized.
- 1826:
Seneca Indians. Transferred to Presbyterians, 1870.
- 1827:
Chickasaw Indians. Discontinued, 1835.
- 1828: Stockbridge Indians.
Discontinued, 1848.
- 1831: Ojibwa Indians. Transferred to
Presbyterians, 1870.
- 1832: Creeks. Discontinued, 1837.
- 1834: Pawnees. Discontinued, 1847.
- 1835: Abenaquis in
Quebec. Discontinued in 1858 when the tribe had nearly died out.
- 1835: Dakota Indians. Part transferred to Presbyterians, 1870, and part to American
Missionary Association, 1883.
- 1836: Oregon Mission. Discontinued
after the massacre of the missionaries, 1847.
Organized into the following series:
- ABC
18.3 Missions to the Cherokee, Choctaw, and Dakota Indians
- ABC
18.4 Missions to the Ojibwa, Chickasaw, Creek and Osage Indians
- ABC 18.5 Missions to the Pawnees, Oregon, Mackinaw, and Stockbridge Indians
- ABC 18.6 Missions to the Maumee and New York Indians
- ABC 18.7 Number not used
- ABC 18.8 Miscellaneous
Note that for some items that are bound volumes, there is a
number in square brackets at the end of the description in this finding aid . This is a
number on the spine of the volume, following an old scheme of classification in the
ABCFM's own library. Numbers after the names of correspondents refer to the
item-numbers of the documents within the volume.
Letters and other documents originating in the American
Board's missions to North American Indians, including the Cherokee, Choctaw, Sioux,
Dakota, Mackinaw, Maumee and other tribes.
This finding aid is a detailed guide to part of one series (ABC
18.3-8) within the Archives of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign
Missions (ABC 1-91). Documents originating in the Board offices, such as copies of
outgoing correspondence to the missions, as well as personal papers of the
missionaries, photographs, and maps, are not covered here. For all these, consult the
finding aid for the main collection.

Maps for the use of the
Cherokee mission, 1838.4 pieces.
This is a collection of four pcs., unbound, relative to the compilation of a
Cherokee Geography book by Samuel A. Worcester. They
are undated, but presumably originated from Park Hill,
Arkansas Territory.
- Map of
the world, consisting of two circular projections of the Eastern and Western
hemispheres, with lettering in the Cherokee alphabet.
- Map of Europe,
with all place names in the Cherokee alphabet.
- A handwritten list of
American place names with their Cherokee equivalent, followed by certain instructions
to the map engraver as to the size, style, placement, etc. of lettering on the map.
- A printed sheet containing the Cherokee alphabet with sound values
of the various characters phoneticized into English.
-
v. 2.
Papers relating to the
controversy with Georgia over the Indians, 1833-1840.
These are documents,
interlarded with commentary, compiled by Daniel S. Butrick c. 1840 to support his views on the proper relationship
of missionaries to Indian political affairs. It concerns not only the "controversy with
Georgia," but also the agitated state of Indian politics following the Treaty of New Echota (1836) and the factions in
Cherokee politics after removal to Arkansas. Most of the documents are copied in the
hand of the compiler, and the originals appear elsewhere in the ABCFM archives. (N.B.
The work is not signed, but internal evidence denotes it as Butrick's, almost beyond
doubt.) Pages are not numbered in the bound work.

v. 3.
A Cherokee missionary on Jews and Indians. 2 v.
This is a study, in two parts, written by Daniel S. Butrick to
prove his belief that the American Indians were one of the Ten Lost
Tribes of Israel. It is chiefly valuable for the detailed material it contains
on Indian culture.
- Part 1. In three sections: bound
separately by thread.
- Sect. A. Introduction, in which Butrick sets forth
his thesis and indicates why some opponents of his view may have obtained false
evidence from the Indians pp. 1-18. Argument as to the historical similarity of the Jews
and the Indians. On facing pages, passages of history from Scripture are compared
with Indian historical tradition to prove a common origin pp. 22-132.
- Sect. B. The facing page method of comparison is adopted to show similarities in
manners, customs, artifacts, physical features, etc. Unnumbered pp. 128 pp.
- Sect. C. The facing page method is adopted to show similarity in language.

v. 4.
The journal of an
unidentified missionary to the Cherokees, 1819-1845.
This is the private journal kept by Daniel S. Butrick at various times from July, 1819 to
August, 1845. There is no signature but internal evidence, especially
the handwriting, indicate clearly that the work is Butrick's. It exists in eleven sections of
varying bulk and covering varying time periods, each section bound by thread. There
are many gaps in the sequence of the journal, possibly indicating that some sections
have been lost. (One such section, covering the better part of 1844, appears as ABC18.3.3, V, which is not listed in the Houghton Library typescript
catalogue of ABCFM material.) N.B. Pages are unnumbered in the bound sections.
- Sect. 1 July 16, 1819 - Dec. 24, 1821 34
pp.
- Sect. 2 Jan. 1, 1822 - June 22, 1822 (?) 78 pp.
- Sect. 3 Jan. 4, 1825 - May (?), 1827 48 pp.
- Sect. 4 Sept. 8, 1830 - Jan. (?), 1832 46 pp.
- Sect. 5 Jan. 11, 1832 - Dec. (?), 1832 68 pp.
- Sect. 6 Jan. 1, 1833 - Dec. 1833 60 pp.
- Sect. 7 May 26, 1838 - Sept. 22, 1838 120 pp.
- Sect. 8 Oct. 4, 1838 - March (?), 1839 82 pp.
- Sect. 9 March 25, 1839 - May 5, 1839 26 pp.

Visiting committee's report to Prudential
committee, May 30 and July 11, 1882.
1. 10 pp. handwritten (possibly in the hand of J. O. Means), dated May 30, 1882. This is a sketch of points to be
made in the full report.
2. 68 pp. handwritten, dated May 30 and July 11, 1882. This is a full report, in great detail, on the condition of the Dakota Indians, the methods and progress of the ABCFM
missions, accompanied by a set of recommendations for future policy. NB: This report
shows some signs of editing for the press, and was probably printed about the time of
the second date - July 11, 1882.

v. 1. Typed transcripts from letter-books of correspondence of Marcus Whitman and H. H. Spalding.; and documents.
This is a collection
of typescripts of selected letters from and to the Oregon mission, taken in the 1930's for
research then in progress for a biography of Whitman. Although the letters copied are
far from a complete, or even representative collection, they do hold a considerable body
of useful material in a form more readily available (and far easier to read) than the
original letter books. There are in some cases duplicates or even triplicates of certain
letters, and it might be possible to maintain a separate collection of these typescripts in
some place more accessible than Houghton. The following is a calendar of the letters,
grouped by writers, plus some miscellaneous material in the same file.

v. 1. Unbound letters, clippings, etc., relating to the
North American Indians.
This is a box of letters,
pamphlets, printed slips etc. relating to the American Indian Missions, but otherwise
largely unrelated to one another. There are some very old letters in this collection which
probably ought to be kept separately for better preservation. Some letters from the
1920's and 30's do not belong in primary archives (they deal with efforts of various
people to obtain material from the collection). The collection of newspaper and
magazine feature stories, book prospecti and miscellaneous pamphlets might be
weeded out with a view to binding in more convenient form.

v. 2. Biographical notes relating to missionaries to
the North American Indians.
A ledger book, the first
79 pages of which contain the names of persons associated with the American Indian
Missions. Listings are grouped by mission, (Cherokee, Choctaw, etc.) Information
usually includes the person's occupation as a mission worker, date and place of birth,
date of death, dates of departure from home community and of arrival on mission
ground, name of husband or wife and date of marriage. Some listings include date and
place of college or seminary graduation and date of ordination.
Entries are
usually in the form of clips from printed sources, with additions or amendments entered
by hand. Some entries are entirely handwritten. It is difficult to determine the date at
which this listing was brought up to date, but it seems to be fairly complete for the
American Indian Missions. It may have been compiled or brought to completion in
connection with some historical project in the late 19th century.
