Provenance:

The Hyde Iconography Collection is a part of the Donald and Mary Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson, which was collected by Donald Frizell Hyde (1909-1966) and Mary Hyde, later Viscountess Eccles (1912-2003). It was compiled by the Hydes singly or in small groups from various sources from 1941 to 2002.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of this collection consists of engravings and other prints relating to Samuel Johnson and his circle, mosty created circa 1700 to 1850. It is particularly rich in images of Johnson and Hester Lynch Piozzi.
The collection was organized primarily to facilitate Mary Hyde Eccles's research and publication activities, and also includes many photographs and other reproductions of images from other collections, as well as related research and printing notes. Many of the clippings in the geographical series were taken from the magazine Country Life. These additional materials were mostly compiled circa 1941 to 1999.
