Biographical / Historical

John Wilson Croker (1780-1857) was a native of Galway, Ireland. He moved to London as a young man, served as Secretary to the Admiralty from 1809 to 1830, and wrote on a wide variety of topics. In 1831, he published a new annotated edition of James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes eight letters by Croker, and sixteen letters received by him. Almost all of the letters relate to Croker's interest in Samuel Johnson, including several relating to his edition of The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Only two letters, of modest consequence, relate to Croker's service as Admiralty Secretary: items (1) and (2). Correspondents of note include Jane Langton, daughter of Bennet Langton, items (3) and (8); John Russell, Earl Russell, item (14); and Richard Wellesley, Marquess Wellesley, item (17).
