Biographical / Historical

George Hoyningen-Huene was born in St Petersburg and fled the Russian Revolution, moving first to London and then in 1920 to Paris. He became an art and fashion photographer whose work was published widely in Harper's Bazar, Fairchild's Magazine, and French Vogue. In his later career, he became a prominent portrait photographer in Hollywood.

This finding aid is not done in traditional Houghton style, and requires some explanation; it is organized into the following series: The first series (I. Albums) describes several disbound albums of prints and lists out the boxes which the disbound albums are in, with the dates covered in each box. The numbers in parentheses before each box are the print numbers that are included in it (e.g. prints 1 through 39 of album 1 are in the first box)]. The second series (II. Matted prints) is composed of 3 boxes of prints removed from the collection, matted, used for exhibition, and then returned to different boxes. The third series (III. Index) is an index arranged alphabetically by name of model. The text gives the album/print number (e.g. the first item listed is print 79 from album 6, which series I tells us is in box 11). If the print is matted, then it will be listed in this index as (e.g.: Box matted prints 1.01).
