Scope and Contents

Extra-illustrated and extended to 6 vols. by the insertion of about 380 prints, portraits, and views, as well as 115 drawings, broadsides, and pamphlets. Each volume has special letterpress title page: Old London illustrated, containing a history of the hostelries in and about its neighborhood .... Inscription on front flyleaf of v. 1: "The drawings in these volumes were made for Mr. Dodshon Foster, who secured the services of Mr. [J.T.] Wilson, the friend and assistant of Mr. Birket Foster the artist. His Brother Mr. Dodshon had amused himself for many years in collecting prints and having drawings made to illustrate [this set]. Part of this collection is embodied in this Work .... He died some years since, when his collection passed into my hands. [signed:] Francis Harvey, January, 1884."
