Biographical / Historical

Elliston was an English actor and theatrical manager, as well as lessee of the Surrey Theatre, London, beginning in 1809. He later served as manager of the Drury Lane Theatre.


This collection was used by George Raymond for his Life and enterprises of R. W. Elliston, issued in London (1857), and contains very little new data.

Scope and Contents

Contains letters from Elliston to various correspondents, chiefly concerning his career as a theatre manager. Correspondents include George Colman, William Dowton, William Charles Macready, William Thomas Moncrieff, James Winston, and others. Also includes contracts, bills and other business documents, some playbills, and clippings, with manuscript notes by James Winston, covering the years 1791-1826.
