Biographical / Historical

The English painter DeWilde was noted for his theatrical portraits in oil and watercolor. He first exhibited his work in 1776 and was commissioned to provide illustrations for Bell's British Theatre, ca. 1790.

Three bound volumes labeled "Portraits of Celebrated Actors and Actresses in Character: Original Drawings by Samuel DeWilde," containing portraits in pencil and watercolor.
