Biographical / Historical

Pierce, a lawyer, held many civil offices in Massachusetts, was active in Republican politics, and was the official biographer of Charles Sumner.

Consists of letters to Pierce on political and legal affairs, some in response to the speeches and writings that he mailed to friends and colleagues. Correspondents include Charles Francis Adams, Richard Henry Dana, James Miller McKim, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Henry Wilson.
