Biographical / Historical

Griswold, an advocate of "Americanism" in literature, worked to increase public respect for American authors. He was on the staff of various magazines including Graham's Magazine (assistant editor, 1842-1843, succeeding Edgar Allen Poe), edited anthologies of poetry, and was a controversial literary critic.

Scope and Contents

Contains professional correspondence concerning printing and publishing of literary works, some in magazines. Included are letters to George Rex Graham, founder and editor of Graham's Magazine, and letters to Griswold from some of his protégés. Also letters relating to a memorial meeting in honor of James Fenimore Cooper.
