Recognized by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635 as a literary organization of 40 members, the French Academy attempts to govern French literary efforts, grammar, orthography, and rhethoric.
Arranged alphabetically by name.
Contains autograph letters and cartes-de-visite of members of the Académie française. The collection was compiled by C. R. Greenough and contains personal letters and correspondence of the members of l'Académie française from 1650-1891. The correspondence largely involves personal meetings, candidacy for election, literary reviews, and orthographic discussions. There are comments on essays and books that were written by and traded amongst members. Some correspondence originates from the Ministre de l'Intérior, the Ministre de l'Instruction Publique, the Université de France, and the Grande-Chancellerie de la Légion d'Honneur.
