Wheeler, a classical scholar, was a tutor in Greek and an instructor in history at Harvard (1838-1842).

The collection focuses on the years Wheeler taught at Harvard. It contains letters to him pertaining to both personal and professional matters, manuscripts by him on classical figures, one box of page proofs with manuscript revisions of his edition of Herodotus published in 1842, notes, exercises (mostly Greek translations) by the students he taught, reading lists, subject outlines, and lists of students.
