Immediate Source of Acquisition:

*49-1453 - *49-2625. Purchased from Alfred Leete Hampson with funds given by Gilbert H. Montague, class of 1901, in happy memory of Amy Angel Collier Montague; received: 1950 May.

Restricted; permission of the curator must be obtained to use the books.

Biographical / Historical

These books were included as part of the purchase of the Dickinson papers in 1950. At the time of the purchase, the books were physically located at the Evergreens, many volumes having originally been shelved at the Homestead prior to its sale by Martha Dickinson Bianchi in 1916.

Arrangement

Organized into the following series:

Scope and Contents

Following are shelfmark numbers of books most clearly associated with Emily Dickinson. They contain her autograph; presentation inscriptions, to and from her; in a few cases Susan Dickinson's ascription of ownership to her, or other evidence of Emily Dickinson's ownership:
This list includes all books removed from The Evergreens to Houghton Library. The "Dickinson family library" was not retained in its entirety by Houghton Library. The Library returned to Alfred Leete Hampson those books published after Emily Dickinson's death (1886); and law and other books owned, or presumably owned, by Edward or Austin Dickinson. This guide includes, as separate listings, both those books retained by Houghton and those returned to The Evergreens.
The Dickinson family books held at Houghton Library are cataloged in HOLLIS. To find these books, search HOLLIS, choosing "Other call number" and entering EDR with the appropriate number. You can also search HOLLIS by author and/or title.
See at the end a list of the unopened (uncut) pages found in the periodicals.
