Caldecott, an English artist, was a popular illustrator, especially of books for children.


Organized into the following series:

Scope and Contents

Consists of over 500 drawings by Caldecott including drawings and studies for book and magazine illustrations, sketchbooks, and drawings not firmly linked to any known publication. Contains designs for relief panels, friezes and oil paintings; figures and landscape drawings; portraits; botanical animal and costume studies; cartoons; watercolors; designs for bookcovers; and greeting cards. Also includes illustrated manuscript letters, scrapbooks, an American Library Association Caldecott Medal, and Caldecott's self-portrait sketch in oil. Includes drawings for: [Will] Blisson's last round; The babes in the wood; Come lads and lasses; Lieutenant Bang and Ensign Fluttermouse; The rivals; Some of Aesop's fables with modern instances; The three jovial huntsmen; The queen of hearts; and others.
