    Biographical / Historical

    George Ritchie Kinloch, best known as editor of Ancient Scottish Ballads, was born at Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland, about 1796, and became a lawyer. In 1824 he proposed, without publishing, a "Collection of Scottish proverbs." In 1827 he published, Ancient Scottish ballads, recovered from tradition, and never before published, and The ballad book. In 1842 he was appointed assistant-keeper of the register of deeds in Edinburgh Register House and was head from 1851-1869. He died in Edinburgh in 1877.

    Includes ballad text transcripts, notes, letters, annotated printed copy, clippings, and manuscripts for publication for Kinloch's Ancient Scottish ballads : recovered from tradition and never before published; with notes, historical and explanatory ; and an appendix containing the airs of several of the ballads, London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, & Green, 1827. Includes notes and annotations made after Kinloch's death, by Scottish ballad collector, William Macmath. Also includes ballad text in the hands of James Beattie, John Hill Burton, Robert Chambers, Joseph Robertson, and others, and letters to Harvard professor, Francis James Child.
