Biographical / Historical

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short-story writer. He is best known for his novels, The scarlet letter and The house of the seven gables.

Scope and Contents

Manuscripts by Hawthorne and his letters to publisher James Thomas Fields. Includes: autograph manuscript of The house of the seven gables (with a photocopy available for use) that includes an autograph poem about Hawthorne's death by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; manuscripts of chapters from Our old home; and the manuscript preface to Twice-told tales. Most of the Hawthorne letters are copies, a few are autographs. Also contains a few portraits (two engravings), and an autograph signaure.
