Acquisition Information:

The Svenson papers were donated to the Gray Herbarium Archives by Svenson's niece, Anna Mae Stainbrook on April 5, 1986. They were delivered to the Herbarium by Svenson's colleague, Dr. Les Eastman.

Biography:

Henry Knute Svenson (1897-1986) (Harvard Ph.D. 1929) was curator of Brooklyn Botanical Garden, N.Y., 1930-1946, and chief botanist for Vincent Astor Expedition to the Galapagos Islands in 1930; curator in forestry and botany at American Museum of Natural History in N.Y., 1946-. Svenson also co-authored a guide to flora of Cape Cod (1979).

Scope and Content:

The Henry Knute Svenson Papers consist of professional and some personal correspondence, research notes, plant specimens, original sketches, photographs, reprints, scrapbooks, and maps. Correspondence pertains to Svenson's involvement in professional societies, his work at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, plant identification, plant collecting, mostly at Cape Cod, Mass. and in Central and South America. Some of the letters are from noted botanists. Also includes unpublished research notes on Cyperaceae, the Galapagos Islands, and other subjects.
