Mary Peele Hunnewell was born on November 17, 1875, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to Walter and Jane Appleton Peele Hunnewell. She was the younger sister of amateur botanist Francis Welles Hunnewell. This collection consists of six watercolors by Hunnewell painted from four specimens she collected in the Pyrenees in France. Four paintings have printed specimen labels from the attached. The printed labels originally read "F.W. Hunnewell, 2nd." The "F.W." has been crossed out and replaced with "M.P."
